First attested in 1720. Borrowed from Austrian German, more specifically from Bavarian-Austrian. Compare Austrian German Ribisel. Suffixed with -i to resolve the word-final consonant cluster, compare cetli from Bavarian zettl or German Zettel (/ˈt͡sɛtl̩/) etc.[1][2]
