rib cage (plural rib cages)

(anatomy) A part of the skeleton within the thoracic area consisting of ribs, sternum and thoracic vertebrae.
Synonym: thoracic cage
The enclosed area created by and within the ribs.

In medicine, the space within the rib cage of living being is usually referred to as a cavity: chest cavity or thoracic cavity when it includes the entire thorax, and pleural cavity when referring to the area surrounding the lungs.
