From Proto-Germanic *rauzaz, *rauzą, from Proto-Indo-European *(H)resg- (“to plait, wattle”), see also Irish rusg (“bark”), Latin restis (“rope”), Lithuanian režģis (“basketwork”), Serbo-Croatian rògoz (“reed”), Ancient Greek ἄρριχος (árrhikhos, “basket”), Persian رغزه (rağza, “woollen cloth”).

Germanic cognates include Old High German rōr (German Rohr), Gothic 𐍂𐌰𐌿𐍃 (raus). Compare also Danish ruse (“a type of woven basket”), Old English rysc (English rush).
