From earlier rọc rọc, a reduplicated form of *rọc, from Old Chinese (OC *roːɡ, “pulley”). Cognate with Thai รอก (rɔ̂ɔk), Khmer រ៉ក (rɑɑk), Mon ရံက်. Compare nòng nọc.
