From Proto-Norse ᚹᚱᚨᛁᛏᚨ (wraita) (1st singular past indicative), ᚹᚨᚱᛡᛁᛏ (warᴀit) (3rd singular past indicative), ᚹᚨᚱᛁᛏᚢ (waritu) (1st singular present indicative), from Proto-Germanic *wrītaną, from Proto-Indo-European *wreyd-. Cognate with Old English wrītan (English write), Old Saxon wrītan (Low German rieten), Old High German rīzan (German reißen).
