From Proto-Vietic *p-seːʔ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer. Cognate with Chut [Rục] pəseː³, Bahnar phei, Pacoh pixay, Khmer ភេ (phei), Mon ဖေံ.
Although Shorto (2006) reconstructed this cognate set as *bheʔ with *-h-, Vietic and Katuic are probably conservative in their preservation of *-s-, with other branches underwent debuccalization.
