1. (history) the name of a country (such as the historical name Đại Việt for Vietnam)
   • 1920, Trần Trọng Kim, Việt Nam sử lược‎, volume I, Trung Bắc Tân Văn, page 4:

     Quốc-hiệu nước ta thay-đổi đã nhiều lần, tuy rằng ngày nay ta vẫn theo thói quen dùng hai chữ An-nam 安 南, nhưng vì hai chữ ấy có ngụ ý phải thần-phục nước Tàu, vậy thì ta nên nhất định lấy tên Việt-nam 越 南 mà gọi nước nhà.

     The name of our country has changed many times; we still follow the custom of using the two characters Annam 安 南, but, as they carry the connotation of bending the knee to China, we should definitely use the name Vietnam 越 南 for our nation.

   Khi viết đơn thì phải bắt đầu bằng quốc hiệu và tiêu ngữ.
