Etymology

Inherited from dialectal Arabic. The exactly corresponding form is found in Tunisian Arabic قرقّة (ʔruʔʔa, qroqqa, brooding hen), South Levantine Arabic قرقة (ʔruʔʔa, qruqqa, brooding hen).[1] Compare also North Levantine Arabic قرقة (ʔirʔa, qirqa), كركة (krikka).[2] Related with Arabic قَرَّقَ (qarraqa), كَرَّكَ (karraka, to cluck), eventually onomatopoetic.
