pumpernikkeli
Finnish
Etymology
The word is borrowed from German Pumpernickel but otherwise these two products have little in common.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈpumperˌnikːeli/, [ˈpumpe̞rˌnikːe̞li]
- Rhymes: -ikːeli
- Syllabification(key): pum‧per‧nik‧ke‧li
Noun
pumpernikkeli
- A biscuit-like, often oval-shaped baked good made of gingerbread (piparkakku) dough and topped with a layer of sugar icing.
Usage notes
The Finnish pumpernikkeli and pumpernickel bread are very different products, as the latter is very similar to the German German Pumpernickel.
