From Old Galician-Portuguese praça (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), a semi-learned term from Vulgar Latin *plattea, from platea, from Ancient Greek πλατεῖα (plateîa), shortening of πλατεῖα (plateîa) ὁδός (hodós, broad way). Cognate with Portuguese praça and Spanish plaza.
