French

Etymology

From prépuce + -ial.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /pʁe.py.sjal/

Adjective

préputial (feminine préputiale, masculine plural préputiaux, feminine plural préputiales)

  1. preputial

Usage notes

One sometimes encounters the spelling prépucial, which may seem appropriate given the spelling of the root word prépuce. However, that word derives from the Latin praeputium; its spelling with -ce reflects its modern French pronunciation while conceding to the standard orthography of modern French, in which the -uce represents /-ys/ where the spelling -ute — closer to the Latin spelling — would represent /-yt/. As the sequence -tia- is usually read as /-sja-/ in contemporary French, the spelling of préputial is able to follow the form of the Latin etymon while remaining in accord of normative French orthography.
