Inherited from Proto-Slavic *perunъ (“thunderbolt”), from Proto-Indo-European *perkunos (“the thunder god”), from *perkʷ- (“oak-tree”). Also the name of the god of thunder in Slavic mythology. Cognate with Latvian pērkons.
