From earlier pedota, pedotta, from Byzantine Greek *πηδώτης (*pēdṓtēs, “helmsman”), from Ancient Greek πηδόν (pēdón, “oarblade, oar”). The pil- forms are probably influenced by pileggiare (“to sail, navigate”).
