phần tử
Vietnamese
Etymology
Sino-Vietnamese word from 分子, composed of 分 (“portion”) and 子 (“child; small thing”), from Japanese 分子 (bunshi), from Middle Chinese 分子 (bjunH tsiX, “part; division; component; member”, literally “portion child”).
燕周之分子也 "Yan is a part of Zhou" - Guliang Zhuan
The tone is slightly irregular, and a regular form would be *phận tử. For the tone difference between phần tử and phân tử, see phần. Doublet of phân tử. Cognate with Mandarin 分子 (fènzǐ) and Cantonese 分子 (fan6 zi2).
