Etymology

Inherited from Old Catalan tànyer, itself from Latin tangere (touch), and influenced by the derivative pertingere (to stretch out, extend, arrive, reach, obtain) and by pertinēre (to pertain), which gave Old Catalan pertenir (eventually being replaced by pertànyer).[1]
