Etymology

The term pendeltåg was introduced in Stockholm in the 1980s, referring to the local trains (lokaltågen) which "pendlar" (run like a pendulum) between a northern and a southern Stockholm suburb without terminating at Stockholm Central Station (since 10 July 2017 replaced by the new underground railway station Stockholm City).
