Uncertain. Possibly linked to Ancient Greek πιττάκιον (pittákion) (cf. Latin pittacium (“label; patch”)), or from a Vulgar Latin root *piticus. Compare Romanian petic (“patch, rag, shred”), Calabrian pettica ("leather band, strip"); cf. also Spanish pedazo (“piece”).
