From Latin palūdem, accusative singular of palūs (“swamp”), originally from Proto-Italic *palūts, related to Latvian peļķe (“puddle”), Lithuanian pelkė (“marsh”), Sanskrit पल्वल (palvala, “pool, pond”), and possibly Ancient Greek πηλός (pēlós, “mud, earth, clay”). Compare Italian palude.
