Borrowed from Malay periksa, from Sanskrit परीक्षा (parīkṣā, “inspection, investigation, examination, test”), from परि- (pari-) ("prefix meaning “around”) + ईक्ष (īkṣa, “to see”). Later evolved to be pa- + ligsa.
