Etymology
A derivative of përball (“to face, to defy”), from për- + ballë (“forehead”). Structurally and semantically comparable with Proto-Germanic *balþaz (“to be bold”) (cf. Old Norse ballr (“hard, stubborn”)), a derivative of Proto-Indo-European *bʰelH (“white, shining”).
