Etymology
Via Provençal pezatge, from Medieval Latin pedāticum (found in medieval charters), from Latin pedem (“foot”). Alternatively a very old derivation of Old French pied (cf. the medieval forms paage, peage). Unrelated to the verb payer (“to pay”).
