oreneta
Catalan
Alternative forms
- oroneta
Etymology
Probably from metathesis of an Old Catalan *eroneta, from a Vulgar Latin *hirundĭtta, a diminutive of Latin hirundō.[1] The suffix may have also been an internal formation within early Catalan: compare the different suffixes used in nearby Romance cognates: Occitan ironda, randoleta, irondela, Spanish golondrina, Portuguese andorinha, French hirondelle, Italian rondine, cf. also Romanian rândunea, rândunică.
