From Proto-Tocharian *e(n)- (in) + ultimately a form of Proto-Indo-European *medʰi- (with, among) (whence also Tocharian A mäcriṃ (id)) + the adjective-forming suffix -ṣṣe. Cognates include English middle, Lithuanian mẽdis (wood), Latin medium, etc.
