From Proto-Tai *niəwᴮ (urine), from Middle Chinese 尿 (MC newH, “urine; to piss”). Cognate with Thai เยี่ยว (yîao), Lao ຍ່ຽວ (nyiāu), ᦵᦍᧁᧈ (yew¹), Tai Dam ꪹꪑꪸ꪿ꪫ, Shan ယဵဝ်ႈ (yāeo), Ahom 𑜊𑜢𑜈𑜫 (jʸiw), Nong Zhuang nyuh, Saek หญู้.
