nhục
Vietnamese
Pronunciation
- (Hà Nội) IPA(key): [ɲʊwk͡p̚˧˨ʔ]
- (Huế) IPA(key): [ɲʊwk͡p̚˨˩ʔ]
- (Hồ Chí Minh City) IPA(key): [ɲʊwk͡p̚˨˩˨]
Etymology 1
Sino-Vietnamese word from 肉.
Within Vietic, certain languages possess a loan from the same source, cf. Pong kɲuk⁷ and similar forms in several Muong lects with tone B1/D1 (Muong Bi nhúc). The corresponding Vietnamese form would be the unattested *nhúc, which was apparently lost after the Common-Viet-Muong stage during the development of Vietnamese and did not replace the native Vietic word thịt.
Etymology 2
Sino-Vietnamese word from 辱.
Adjective
nhục
- humiliated; dishonored
- Chết vinh còn hơn sống nhục.
- It's better to die an honored death than to live a dishonored life.
