nesonym

English

Noun

nesonym (plural nesonyms)

  1. A toponym of an island.
    • 2013, Steven Roger Fischer, Islands: From Atlantis to Zanzibar, page 284:
The earliest known nesonym south of Australia is Van Diemen's Land, which Abel Tasman (1603—1659) immortalized on discovery in 1642 to honour the then Governor General of the Dutch East Indies; in 1856, however, the island was renamed Tasmania ostensibly to honour Tasman himself but actually to remove the 'demon' connotation that hung over this former penal colony.
