From myö- (“rear, beyond”) + -s, from Proto-Finnic *möö-, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *müŋä (“rear, beyond”). Cognate with Erzya мей (mej, “reverse (side)”), мейле (mejľe, “later”). For a similar semantic development, see Hungarian meg (“and, plus”).
