From Proto-Vietic *mɔːs (“mosquito; fly”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *muujs ~ *muə[j]s (“mosquito; gnat”). Cognate with Muong mõi, Khmer មូស (muuh), Phong-Kniang moːs ("fly") and Bahnar moih.
