From Proto-Brythonic *moruɨn, from Proto-Celtic *morignā (compare Old Cornish moroin), from Proto-Indo-European *méryos (“boy, girl”) (compare Latin marītus (“husband”), Ancient Greek μεῖραξ (meîrax, “girl, boy”), Sanskrit मर्य (márya, “young man; foal”)). Related to merch.
