Inherited from Late Latin mastichinus, from Ancient Greek μαστίχινος (mastíkhinos). It may have been analogically re-formed as a singular from the plural (mesteceni), originally of an older form *mestecen, or alternatively influenced analogically by words like cearcăn, leagăn, etc.[1]
