Etymology
From Proto-Albanian *mertja, from Proto-Indo-European *mers (“to trouble”). Compare Latin marzjan (“to hinder, offend”), Lithuanian maršìnti (“make forget”), Ancient Greek μαραίνω (maraínō, “to rub, consume”), Hittite [Term?] (/marriattari/, “will destroy”). Alternatively, a borrowing from Serbo-Croatian mrziti (“to hate”).
