Borrowed through Vulgar Latin from Latin mataxa, from Ancient Greek μέταξα (métaxa). Meaning in common with Eastern Romance: compare Romanian mătase (“silk”), however different than Dalmatian matuos and Italian matassa (“skein, hank”).
