Etymology
From mange + -de, either a new formation or inherited from Old Norse *mengd, from Proto-Germanic *managiþō, cognate with Swedish mängd, Dutch menigte, Old English menigdu. Old Icelandic has a different derivation, mengi, from *managį̄, cf. English many (the noun), German Menge and Gothic 𐌼𐌰𐌽𐌰𐌲𐌴𐌹 (managei).
