Derived from Proto-Indo-European *(s)leuǵ- (“to crawl, slide”), see also Dutch sluiken (“to creep, smuggle, act clandestinely”).[1] Compare Russian лы́жа (lýža, “ski”), Ukrainian ли́жа (lýža, “ski”), Polish łyżwa (“ice skate”).
