From German Luzerne, Yiddish לוצערן (lutsern), Russian люце́рна (ljucérna), Polish lucerna, English lucerne, all from French luzerne, from Provençal Occitan lusèrna (“glowworm”) (in reference to its shiny seeds), from Latin lucerna (“lamp”). Doublet of lucerno.
