From Proto-Albanian *lup-esja, from llup (to gulp down, swallow) (Proto-Albanian *lupa), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *lupa. Compare Sanskrit लुम्पति (lumpáti, to break down, injure), Lithuanian lùpti (to peel), Latvian lupt (to peel; eat), Proto-Slavic *lupiti (to peel).[1]
