Etymology
Obscure,[1] perhaps a crossing of a descendant of Proto-Indo-European *lówh₃trom (“that which is used for washing”), and of Latin lūridus (“pale”) which originated Italian lordo (“filthy”). Compare also lorda.
Cognate with Portuguese ludro.
