From the Proto-Celtic *laɸsketi (“to shine, burn”), from Proto-Indo-European *lh₂p-sḱéti, from *leh₂p- (“to light, shine”). Cognate with Irish loisc (“burn; sting”) and Ancient Greek λάμπω (lámpō, “I shine”).
