Etymology

Borrowed from Latin lilium convallium, probably through Danish or Swedish. Calque of Biblical Hebrew שׁוֹשַׁנַּת הָעֲמָקִים (šôšannat hāʿămāqîm) through Vulgata (probably before the Reformation of the Norwegian Church). Similar to English lily of the valley and Swedish liljekonvalj.

(botany) a lily of the valley (a poisonous plant (or its flower) of genus Convallaria). The flowers in Norway's culture have association with spring and romantique, although they are poisonous.
