From Proto-Uralic *lȣ̈ppɜ (“butterfly”). Cognates include Southern Mansi лӓпӓх (läpäh), Northern Mansi ла̄панты (lāpanty, “butterfly”) (Sosva), Livvi liipoi (“butterfly”), and Eastern Mari лыве (lyve, “butterfly”).[1]
