From Proto-Germanic *hleuþą (“sound”), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱlew-to-, derived from the Proto-Indo-European root *ḱlew- (“hear”). Cognate with Gothic 𐌷𐌻𐌹𐌿𐌸 (hliuþ).
