From Proto-Slavic *lěvъ, from Proto-Indo-European *leh₂iwos. Cognate with Upper Sorbian lěwy, Polish lewy, Czech levý, Russian левый (levyj), Old Church Slavonic лѣвъ (lěvŭ), Ancient Greek λαιός (laiós) and Latin laevus.
