Inherited from Old Swedish løþogher, from Middle Low German lōdich. Cognate German -lötig, Norwegian Bokmål lødig, and English lot (“historical unit of weight”).

Usage notes
Before 1855, the purity of silver was in Sweden measured in sixteenths. For example, tolvlödigt silver denoted an alloy of 12⁄16 = 75% silver and 25% copper.
