From *kurr and suffix -iz, from Proto-Albanian *kurna, from Proto-Indo-European *k(ʷ)or(H)- (compare Latvian cęrs (stump, knotty root), Serbo-Croatian kȍrijen (root)). By analogy of a root (taproot) with the spine.
