From Proto-Finnic *kupla, probably from Proto-Finno-Ugric *kupla. Related to Estonian kubel, Southern Sami gåbloe (“lung”), Karelian kupla, Livvi kubl and probably Inari Sami koble (“roe pouch”), Eastern Mari куво̄л (kuvōl) and Southern Mansi [script needed] (kɛ̮wl-, “to swim, to float”), possibly also Hungarian hólyag (“bladder”).
