kukuřice

Alternative forms
- kukuryce, kukuruc (obsolete)
Etymology
Attested in Karel Thám's Deutsch-böhmisches National-lexikon (1788), in actual usage at least since 1798. A wanderword of unknown Balkan origin, perhaps from Ottoman Turkish قوقوروز (kukuruz) or Serbo-Croatian kukuruz. The ending of the modern form is probably due to paronymic attraction to common suffix -ice.
