Etymology
Possibly from Proto-Slavic *kopylъ (“shoot, sprout; bastard”), from *kopàti (“to dig, cultivate”); compare Ukrainian копил (kopyl) or копиля (kopylja), Bulgarian ко́пеле (kópele). Alternatively ultimately an old paleo-Balkan substrate word; compare Romanian copil, Aromanian cochil, Albanian kopil, Byzantine Greek κόπελος (kópelos).
