From Middle Dutch conijn, from earlier Middle Dutch conin, from Old French connin, a variant of Old French conil, from Latin cunīculus, perhaps from Iberian or Celtiberian. Cognate to English cony, German Kaninchen, Spanish conejo and Portuguese coelho (“rabbit”).
