Etymology
From kart, *kert- (“cut”). Related to Persian کرد (kard), کرت (kart, “plot of land, estate”), کرته (karte), کال (kâl), کاله (kâle),[1][2] and Central Iranian (Abyaneh) kalā.[3] See also Old Armenian քարտակատեմ (kʻartakatem).
