Etymology

Agent noun of kiteb, from Arabic ⁧كَتَبَ⁩ (kataba). The form would be equivalent to Arabic ⁧*كَتّاب⁩ (*kattāb), but ⁧كاتِب⁩ (kātib) is used instead. The plural of this latter is in fact ⁧كُتّاب⁩ (kuttāb), but kittieb may just as well be an independent derivation as Maltese has greatly expanded the use of this measure.
